Tacky mats and contamination control at the door

Most dirt arrives on shoes and wheels. A tacky mat at the door lifts it off before it travels further.

How they work

A tacky mat is a pad of adhesive sheets. Each sheet picks up particles from shoe soles and wheels. When a sheet is dirty, you peel it off to reveal a fresh one.

Where to place them

  • Just inside the entry to the controlled area
  • Before a gowning room
  • At trolley and equipment entry points

Good practice

  • Peel a sheet when it looks dirty, or on a set schedule.
  • Use a mat large enough for two footsteps.
  • Keep the frame or base clean.
  • Choose the sheet colour that shows dirt well.

Choosing a size

Common sizes include 18 x 36 and 24 x 36 inches. Pick by traffic and door width. Trolleys need a wider mat or a roller system.

Tacky mats support a good gowning and cleaning routine. They do not replace one.
