Fastener Risk Disclaimer

Hydrogen Embrittlement Disclaimer

This disclaimer explains hydrogen embrittlement risk in high-strength fasteners, plated components and customer application responsibility.

hydrogen embrittlement disclaimer high strength fastener fracture risk

1. Introduction

This Hydrogen Embrittlement Disclaimer applies to all products supplied by Sucatec Pte Ltd where there is a potential risk of hydrogen-induced embrittlement. Hydrogen embrittlement is a known material condition that can result in delayed brittle fracture in high-strength steels under certain conditions. Hydrogen embrittlement fasteners are particularly susceptible in high-strength and plated applications.

2. Hydrogen Embrittlement Risk

Fasteners and components with a hardness of ≥360 HV, particularly those subjected to electroplating or galvanic surface treatments, may be susceptible to hydrogen-induced embrittlement.

The risk is significantly increased in:

  • High-strength fasteners, including strength class 10.9, 12.9 or equivalent
  • Components with hardness levels exceeding approximately 360 HV
  • Products subjected to electroplating, galvanising or similar processes

Relevant standards, including ISO 4042, recognise and address the risk of hydrogen embrittlement in coated fasteners. This represents a known high strength fastener risk within coated and treated components. This risk is particularly relevant to fasteners and mechanical components used in high-strength applications.

3. Hydrogen Embrittlement Mechanism

Hydrogen embrittlement occurs when atomic hydrogen is introduced into high-strength steel, typically during processes such as electroplating or acid cleaning.

This hydrogen diffuses into the material and accumulates at areas of stress concentration, leading to a reduction in ductility and potential delayed fracture under load.

The risk is particularly critical in high-strength fastener applications where failure may occur without visible deformation. Alternative coatings, materials and manufacturing processes may be supported through our manufacturing and global sourcing solutions.

4. Standards and Industry Practices

Industry standards such as ISO 4042 and ASTM F1941 provide guidance on coating processes and post-treatment requirements, including hydrogen embrittlement relief baking.

Where applicable, compliance with these standards may reduce the risk of hydrogen embrittlement, but does not eliminate it entirely.

Customers must ensure that appropriate specifications, testing and validation procedures are applied for critical applications.

5. Mitigation and Alternatives

Alternative materials, coatings and manufacturing processes may reduce the risk of hydrogen embrittlement. These may include non-electrolytic coatings, mechanical plating or alternative material selections.

Sucatec Pte Ltd may provide guidance where requested; however, such guidance is provided without obligation or guarantee of suitability.

6. Customer Responsibility

The selection, specification, application and use of all products remain the sole responsibility of the customer.

Customers are responsible for:

  • Ensuring compliance with applicable standards and safety requirements
  • Assessing suitability for the intended application
  • Verifying material and coating compatibility
  • Conducting any required testing or validation

This forms part of a broader fastener embrittlement disclaimer covering material and process-related risks. Please also refer to our Product Application and Liability Disclaimer.

7. Limitation of Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, Sucatec Pte Ltd and its affiliates shall not be liable for any failure, damage, loss or consequential impact arising from hydrogen-induced embrittlement.

All warranties, whether express or implied, including but not limited to fitness for purpose or performance in relation to hydrogen embrittlement, are expressly excluded.

8. Acceptance of Risk

By purchasing, specifying or using products supplied by Sucatec Pte Ltd that fall within the scope of this disclaimer, the customer acknowledges and accepts the inherent risks associated with hydrogen embrittlement.

9. Scope of Application

This disclaimer applies to all:

  • Quotations
  • Orders
  • Sales
  • Deliveries
  • Contracts and agreements

issued by or on behalf of Sucatec Pte Ltd. This disclaimer should be considered alongside our Compliance Policy.
